Beautiful machine : Motus USA M-RACING FUSION Indoor Cycling Bike

Ok. Let me start off by saying that while I have cycled all my life I currently am not in great cycling shape and I decided to bite the bullet and get a piece of equipment the whole family could use, whether it be an elliptical, treadmill or stationary bike. I wasn't even looking at spinners but quality ellipticals are HUGE and very expensive and treadmills are the same way.

Once I narrowed it to exercise bikes, I started looking at the spinners as well. I discovered they simulated real bike riding better than anything and once I realized a spinner was just a solid hunk of metal with a flywheel and adjustable seat and handlebars using pretty much what amounted to bike parts, I was sold. No motors to break down or strange parts where they would have to send a service tech.

I was looking hard at the Lemond RevMaster Pro but they were out of stock so I went with the Motus--the Keiser spinners look really nice, too.
Of course, once I ordered it I scoured for more reviews on the net and though the complaints weren't too harsh there was one that seemed to be repeated: the resistance range is too limited, not usable after gear 4. (There was a funny one too of it being hard to get on or off, which was funny because I get on it exactly like I get on my real bikes!)

Now that I have had it a couple of days I can say I am very happy with the resistance levels and am so glad I got the Motus with the shifter versus the knob style of resistance. I'll give my description of how each gear feels to me, but let me start off by saying I am a fairly large guy (220lbs) and have large thighs so YMMV.

Gear 1: This is like riding on a smooth road that is slightly downhill. Not downhill enough to build up speed, but enough for there to be little effort to pedal.
Gear 2: Like gear 1 but on a flat road instead of downhill. This gear and gear 1 really don't give a workout but are good for warming up and keeping things limber.
Gear 3: I ride this seated and this is a really smooth, not too hard gear. This is my main gear for now.
Gear 4: This is pretty hard. I ride seated but it puts a good amount of strain on my legs. In a couple of weeks, when I get my riding legs back, this will be by main cruising gear.
Gear 5: This gear is pretty serious. A tweener for me as to riding on seat or standing. This is like making a solid push but less than a sprint.
Gear 6: Full on sprint.
Gear 7: This gear is great for simulating going up a very steep hill in a low gear where after each downward thrust the bike comes to a complete stop and you have to bring the other foot down to keep moving.

While those descriptions are subjective I actually did a little more scientific of a test where you can test to see if your resistance is set up like mine, which came from the factory.
So for each of the gears I pedaled to 240 RPM and then took my feet off the pedals and counted how many full rotations it took to come to a stop.

Gear 1: 9 3/4 rotations
Gear 2: 3 1/2 rotations
Gear 3: 1 1/2 rotations
Gear 4: 3/4 rotation
Gear 5: 1/2 rotation
Gear 6: 1/4 rotation
Gear 7: 0

Pros:
-Very smooth and quiet, just a very slight hiss. Nothing to disturb TV viewing
-Rock solid
-Extremely adjustable seat and handlebars. My son is 4'11" and the lowest adjustments are too small while I am near 6' and I am nowhere near the largest settings.
-Easy to assemble
-Looks great
-Dual clip-on/strap pedals
-Pulse monitor works fine--but you have to maintain continual contact for at least 30 secs
-Computer keeps track of your workout. So if you workout for 15 minutes and then come back again later it starts from where you left off
-Warranty. Five years frame and 2 years full is pretty darn good nowadays.

Cons:
-Computer doesn't take into account resistance level so that the speed, calories burned, etc are pretty meaningless.

Overall, a great indoor riding experience that I highly recommend.
